June 9th:  Oracle Fusion Middleware delivers best-in-class dual processor result for Intel Xeon x7560 Platform with SPECjAppServer2004 benchmark

February 15th:  Latest release of Oracle Database Lite now available

Oracle has announced availability of the latest release of Oracle Database Lite, a comprehensive solution for developing, deploying and managing applications for mobile and embedded environments.  With Oracle Database Lite, mobile users gain continuous access to data unconstrained by mobile network bandwidth and coverage, allowing them to access enterprise data even in the absence of a network connection.  The new release provides the ability to bi-directionally synchronise data between the open source SQLite database and Oracle Database.  This release also provides centralised user and device provisioning and management of SQLite-based mobile applications, allowing disconnected users to have an experience virtually identical to users who are connected.  Click here to read the press release...

December 22nd:  New release of Oracle SQL Developer

November 9th:  Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition 4.0 now available

October 12th:  Oracle previews Oracle Fusion Middleware Java Development Tool for Mobile Applications

October 12th:  Oracle unveils new Oracle PartnerNetwork Specialised Program

Further enabling partners to grow and profit with Oracle, the company has announced Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) Specialised. The new program represents the most significant evolution of the Oracle PartnerNetwork in over a decade.  Built on the foundation of Oracle Enablement 2.0 training and support, the OPN Specialised program will enable partners to establish industry recognition by following a formal process to become specialised in key Oracle solution areas. This allows partners to expand customer sales by differentiating themselves in the solutions and services they offer.  The program will become effective on December 1, allowing time for partners to learn about the new program and prepare for the transition. September 4th :  October Critical Patch Update rescheduled

There is a change in the previously announced release date of the October 2009 Critical Patch Update (CPU).  Since many Oracle customers with responsibility for deploying the CPU within their respective organisations will be attending Oracle OpenWorld October 11-15, 2009, the update originally scheduled to be published on Tuesday, October 13th, will be released on October 20th 2009.  Other dates on the schedule are not affected. 

September 1st:   Oracle Database 11g Release 2 now available

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is available and the Linux version can be downloaded from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) site.  This latest generation of the world’s number 1 database builds on the innovations introduced in Oracle Database 11g to help organisations deliver better information throughout the enterprise, at a higher quality of service and at a much lower cost.  Server costs can be reduced by up to 5x by consolidating onto the grid.  In this release, Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) delivers grid plug and play and new server pooling capabilities that enable organisations to reduce their server costs by streamlining the provisioning and management of consolidated database grids.  Oracle RAC One Node, a new Database option, has also been released. This allows customers to consolidate their less mission critical database environments on the grid with most of the redundancy and availability provided by Oracle Real Application Clusters.

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Automatic Storage Management, Oracle Real Application Clusters and Active Data Guard allow storage and server resources to be used for both fault tolerance and running production workloads, keeping servers and storage from sitting idle waiting for failures.  In this release, Edition-based Redefinition is introduced to allow customer database applications to be upgraded online, thus removing the need for separate upgrade environments.  Automated self-management capabilities have also been enhanced to help double database administrator productivity and reduce the time required to upgrade from prior releases.  Click here to read the press release...  For a description of new features, please see here...

August 21st:  Oracle announces Oracle VM Template Builder

Oracle has announced Oracle VM Template Builder.  This will provide faster application deployment for ISVs and end-users.  This is an open source, graphical utility that makes it easy to use Oracle Enterprise Linux “Just enough OS” (JeOS)–based scripts for developing pre-packaged virtual machines for Oracle VM.  End-users and ISVs have the option to develop their Oracle VM Templates by using these JeOS-based scripts directly or via the graphical Oracle VM Template Builder.  Click here to read the press release...

July 30th:    Oracle releases Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database 11g and Oracle In-Memory Database Cache 11g

July 28th:   Microsoft developers migrate to Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET)

Microsoft has announced its deprecation of System.Data.OracleClient, also known as Microsoft OracleClient.  Microsoft developers are now looking to migrate their existing .NET data access code to ODP.NET, on account of Oracle's long term ODP.NET support and ODP.NET's unique performance and feature benefits. July 21st:    New release of Oracle Coherence

Oracle has announced the release of Oracle Coherence 3.5.  A component of Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Coherence 3.5 now provides tera-scale support to in-memory data grids through configurable off-heap storage.  This new version introduces Coherence Guardian, a safeguard that automatically detects and corrects service disruptions.  The new release provides native integration with Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle WebLogic Portal, dramatically boosting the performance and scalability of applications deployed on these products.  Click here to read the press release...

July 21st:    Oracle Fusion Middleware delivers world record single-node result on Sun SPARC Enterprise Server with SPECjAppServer2004

July 15th:   Critical Patch Update

The Critical Patch Update (CPU) for July 2009 was released on July 14, 2009.  Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.  The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information.  It includes a list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities and links to other important documents.  Supported Products that are not listed in the "Supported Products and Components Affected" Section of the Advisory do not require new patches to be applied.  It is essential to review the CPU supporting documentation referenced in the Advisory before applying patches.  The Critical Patch Update Advisory is available here... 

July 15th:   Oracle introduces Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler

June 5th:  Oracle Weblogic Server and Oracle Database 11g set new world record  

Oracle WebLogic Server, Oracle Enterprise Linux and Oracle Database 11g have set a world record dual-node result with the SPECjAppServer2004 industry standard benchmark.  Oracle WebLogic Server 10g Release 3 with Oracle Database 11g, achieved 7,311.50 SPECjAppServer2004 JOPS@Standard (jAppServer Operations per Second). The Java application server was running on two Dell PowerEdge R610 rack servers, each equipped with a two-socket Intel Xeon x5570 2.93 GHz processor.  Oracle Database 11g was running on a four-socket Dell PowerEdge R900 rack server with an Intel Xeon x7460 hex-core 2.66 GHz processor. April 28:  Oracle and LSI deliver breakthrough benchmark performance utilising Oracle Database 11g for file system storage

Oracle and LSI Corporation have achieved breakthrough performance for Oracle Database 11g SecureFiles utilising the LSI Engenio 7900 Storage System.  Oracle and LSI developed a clustered file system benchmark to demonstrate that Oracle SecureFiles delivers comparable file-system-like performance with increased scalability using a database for storing and managing structured and unstructured data.  Oracle SecureFiles, a key feature of Oracle Database 11g, enables customers to store unstructured file content such as images, audio, video, PDFs and spreadsheets. Oracle SecureFiles is engineered to deliver high performance for file data comparable to that of traditional file systems while retaining the reliability, scalability and security advantages of Oracle Database 11g.  Breakthrough performance of 4.5GB/sec was achieved running Oracle SecureFiles BLOBs (binary large objects) on an LSI Engenio 7900 storage system. April 20th:  Oracle buys Sun Microsystems    

Oracle and Sun Microsystems announced today that they have entered into a definitive acquisition agreement.  According to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, this "....transforms the IT industry, combining best-in-class enterprise software and mission critical computing systems.  Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system – applications to disk – where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves. Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up.”

There are substantial long term strategic customer advantages to Oracle owning two key Sun software assets: Java and Solaris. Java is one of the computer industry’s best known brands and most widely deployed technologies. Oracle breaks more performance world records, this time with their Java Virtual Machine (JVM), JRockit.  Using an industry standard benchmark that measures Java-based server-side performance, Oracle now holds the world record for this performance category on Windows, Linux and using an Intel based 4-socket system.

January 21st:  Oracle named a leader in worldwide embedded database management systems vendor share by leading market research firm

Leading market research firm IDC states in its latest report, "Worldwide Embedded Database Management Systems 2007 Vendor Shares," that Oracle is the leading vendor with 26.3 percent of worldwide embedded DBMS software revenue.  Additionally, IDC notes that Oracle increased its vendor share lead over the previous year with annual growth of 26.0 percent.
